Disclaimer: All the Final Fantasy characters in this series of ficlets and/or short stories belong to those talented people at Square/Enix or whatever they are called now.
This is a series of Valentine's Day fics. Not all of them will contain smut, but they all are from the FF8 fandom, and the main pairing is, of course, Irvine and Squall. This will also be generally silly, have sappy moments and will hopefully be fun for you to read and fun for me to write. Enjoy.
This is YAOI - boys with boys, caring, desiring, kissing, hugging, groping…um, yeah…but that’s why you’re reading this, yes?
Book of Love: Voucher 3
By Garden's Gnome
Lavender eyes looked from watch to door to the cafeteria clock and then back to the door before looking around at the other students getting their lunches.
Just like Squall and I should be, Irvine thought to himself as he scanned the cafeteria again, eyes catching a glimpse of black and blue over at Selphie’s table. Irvine tried not to glare at the young sorceress’ back but he found it hard and so dropped his eyes to glare at the table.
It wasn’t really Rinoa’s fault that Squall wasn’t going to be able to share lunch with the cowboy, as was their custom. Usually by this time, they would have made their trip through the lunch line and then retreated to Squall’s office to chat quietly while eating and then perhaps enjoy some post lunch frolicking.
There would be no playing today.
Rinoa wasn’t the only person to arrive from Deling City early that morning. She had come with her father and Martine, deciding to catch a ride with them after they had decided to visit Balamb Garden when they heard that the president of Esthar was in residence. Laguna was here to discuss technology sharing between Esthar and the Gardens with Squall and Cid before Balamb’s headmaster would go to the other Garden.
General Caraway and Martine had decided they didn’t want to wait and so had arrived unannounced, knowing that Cid wouldn’t be rude and send them away. Irvine grinned to himself as a thought of him being in charge and not letting them in, taking pot shots at them with his rifle from the top of the main gate came to mind.
“What are you smiling about?” Quistis asked as he arrived at Irvine’s table.
“Just what I’d do to our uninvited guest if I was in charge,” Irvine said, still smiling.
“Yes, they are rather annoying,” Quistis agreed. “I’ve been running around doing errands for Caraway since he arrived, getting him coffee or getting extra copies of notes I was making for Cid.”
“How did you escape?” Irvine asked.
“This,” Quistis said as she handed over a piece of torn white paper.
Irvine took the paper and opened it. On its lined surface there was a picture of a stick person holding what appeared to be a cup, love voucher: a cup of coffee written below the stick person in Squall’s familiar scrawl. I know this isn’t a real voucher but I left the book in my room…I’d love a cup of coffee. Please Irvine. Irvine smiled as he read Squall’s request.
“What are you doing now, Quistis?” Irvine asked as he looked up at the blonde woman.
“I’m supposed to be getting some reference books from the library and then returning with whatever Squall has asked you to get him.”
“Well, this is going to take a little time,” Irvine said standing and sliding the paper into a pocket. “Tell Squall I’ll bring it up to him as soon as it’s ready.”
Quistis gave Irvine a puzzled look before looking at her watch and deciding she’d delayed long enough.
“Fine, I’ll tell him. But if you do something wrong…”
“Don’t worry, Quisty. Squall will thank me for this,” Irvine said confidently as he left Quistis standing beside a now vacant table.
Quickly walking towards the parking garage, Irvine dialled Cid’s secretary and got permission to take one of the Garden cars to Balamb, promising to bring Cid back something from his favourite sandwich shop. He neglected to mention that it was his and Squall’s preferred eating place in Balamb too. Plus they made the best hot drinks.
Sitting at the counter, Irvine watched as the owner personally made his rather large order, all the while telling Irvine the most current gossip in town. Together they carefully stacked the food and drinks into a box and then Irvine was on his way back to Garden. He almost wore the drink he was slurping on as Zell tore past him on his latest toy - a rather nice black motorbike that purred it’s way into the garage just ahead of Irvine.
“You almost made me ruin Squall’s lunch, Zell,” Irvine growled at the martial artist the moment Zell removed his helmet.
“Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it?” Zell asked as he patted the still warm bike, white teeth flashing in the dim light.
“Zell,” Irvine said warningly as he pulled the box of food from the car.
“Sorry man,” Zell said. “I just get so caught up in the feel of my baby rumbling under me…”
Irvine watched Zell’s blue eyes stare of into the distance dreamily and stepped around the blonde and his bike to head into the Garden.
“Sounds beautiful,” he said to Zell as he left the tattooed man behind.
I’ll have to see if Zell will lend me that bike for a day and take Squall for a ride in the sun, Irvine thought as he headed for the elevator. Hitting the button for the top floor, Irvine whistled a random tune as he watched the numbers count upwards. The elevator pinged and Irvine exited into the hallway that lead to the Headmaster’s and Commander’s offices. He nodded to Cid’s secretary instead of tipping his hat like normal seeing as his hands were full. The secretary smiled and opened the door for him.
“Special delivery,” Irvine announced as he stepped into the room, smiling as he interrupted something General Caraway was rambling on about. He flashed Squall a quick grin and saw the relief in his lover’s eyes.
“I bring lunch all the way from Balamb,” he said as he waited for room to be made on Squall’s desk for the box of food and drinks. “Wait your turn,” he said to Squall, playfully smacking his fingers when the brunette went to reach into the box.
Irvine went about the room handing out food and drinks to Cid, Laguna and Kiros. When he got to Martine and Caraway he smiled apologetically.
“Sorry, but I didn’t know you were here so I’ve only got enough for five,” he said as he stepped around them and gave Quistis her share of the food.
“Irvine,” Squall said as he stood next to the desk, open drink in hand.
“Hey, I said to wait,” Irvine pouted, eyes twinkling at slightly wide blue eyes as Squall’s brain processed the flavours in his mouth.
“Enjoy your hot chocolate, Squall,” Irvine said quietly next to the brunette’s ear as he picked up the box that now only contained his food, brushing his lips over the tip of Squall’s ear. “I’ll have someone from the cafeteria bring up something for you,” he said to Caraway and Martine as he walked to the door.
A hand reached around Irvine and opened the door for him. The sniper looked down at Squall as the brunette followed him through the office door and pulled it closed behind him.
Squall tasted of chocolate with a hint of vanilla and caramel and a tiny tang of alcohol. Irvine sucked on the brunette’s tongue, not caring that Cid’s secretary was getting a good show as Squall‘s free hand slid up to caress his cheek.
“Thanks,” Squall whispered against Irvine’s lips as he pulled away and went back into the office.
Irvine watched the closed door for a couple of moments before turning to the grinning woman.
“Could you put a call to the cafeteria for some food for General Caraway and Martine please,” he asked as he lowered the box to hide his growing hard-on.
“Sure, Irvine. You go enjoy your lunch,” the secretary said with a knowing smile as she dialled the number.
Irvine headed towards the elevator, holding the box away from his slightly aroused body, all the while planning to return to Balamb after lunch and get more hot chocolate for Squall to drink later that night.
