Disclaimer: All the Final Fantasy characters in this series of ficlets and/or short stories belong to those talented people at Square/Enix or whatever they are called now.
This is a series of Valentine's Day fics. Not all of them will contain smut, but they all are from the FF8 fandom, and the main pairing is, of course, Irvine and Squall. This will also be generally silly, have sappy moments and will hopefully be fun for you to read and fun for me to write. Enjoy.
This is YAOI - boys with boys, caring, desiring, kissing, hugging, groping…um, yeah…but that’s why you’re reading this, yes?
Book of Love: Voucher 27
By Garden's Gnome
“Squall, you got a minute?” Seifer asked as he poked his head around the commander’s office door.
“I have a secretary for a reason, Seifer,” Squall said, not looking up as he turned the page of the book on his desk.
“I told her I’d see myself in. She looked busy ordering you some lunch,” the blonde man said as he walked into Squall’s office and shut the door behind him. “We need to talk.”
“About what?” Squall asked, sitting back in his seat and rubbing his tired eyes.
“You look like shit, Squall,” Seifer said as he got a good look at the brunette’s puffy eyes, red nose and flushed cheeks.
“It’s just a cold,” Squall said, grabbing up some tissues and noisily blowing his nose.
“Have you had anything for it yet?” Seifer asked, walking around the desk and placing a hand to the brunette’s forehead.
“That feels nice,” the brunette mumbled.
“Shit Squall, you’re sick. Irvine shouldn’t have let you out of bed,” Seifer growled half angry with the stubborn brunette as he hit the intercom.
“Tell Kinneas to get his butt to the commander’s office right now,” he told the secretary.
“He doesn’t know,” Squall said as the intercom clicked off.
“You should be home resting in bed and letting you boyfriend pamper you,” Seifer said as he began to clean up Squall’s desk.
Listening to the secretary call the brunette’s lover to the office over the communications system, Seifer continued to clean up. All the tissues that littered the floor were put into the trash and Squall’s computer was turned off.
“Who is your second in command?” Seifer asked as he picked up some books on the desk, only to have Squall grab them from him. “Hey.”
“I need this book,” Squall mumbled quietly as he grabbed the Book of Love from the top of the pile, the other books slipping from his hands to be caught be Seifer. “Zell is.”
“Is that the book that the vouchers came from?” Seifer asked, eyeing the book and wondering if he could get it out of Squall’s hands for a look.
“Yes it is. I was trying to choose one for today but I couldn’t concentrate.”
“That’s cause you’re sick, you stubborn ass,” Seifer said. “Actually that is what I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Me being sick?” Squall asked tiredly, half sinking into his chair and holding the book over his eyes to block out the overhead lights.
“No, the vouchers. This one in particular,” he said, pulling a crinkled piece of white paper from a pocket and handing it over.
Squall had no choice but to grab Seifer’s wrist and pull it closer, looking at the voucher through barely open eyes. He felt so very tired and just wanted to sleep.
“What about it?” he asked, releasing the blonde’s hand.
“It’s gotta stop.”
“Why? I thought you and Zell were having fun with them.”
“We are,” Seifer admitted with a light blush. “But I think we can figure it out on our own now.”
“Good. It’s about time,” Squall said.
“What do you mean?” Seifer asked as the door to the office opened.
“Hey, Squall, Seifer,” Irvine greeted the two men as he entered the room. “What’s up?”
“Your idiot lover is sick, Kinneas. Take him home and look after him,” Seifer said, quickly grabbing the book out of Squall’s arms and stepping out of the way as Irvine hurried to the desk and began checking the brunette over.
Taking the chance while he had it, Seifer quickly flicked through the book, looking at the vouchers and noting the many torn out pages. He slipped the voucher that he had into the book and then turned his attention back to the other two men.
“I can walk, Irvine,” Squall was saying as he was scooped out of his chair by the sniper.
“You can barely lift your hands and are falling asleep, Squall. Don’t be stubborn,” Seifer said as he tore a page from the book and held it before the brunette’s face. “This one.”
Squall found it hard to make his eyes focus on the page but managed to read the words. Love Voucher: A Weekend Away. It sounded heavenly; a chance to get away from the Garden even if it was only for a day or two. He nodded his agreement, head lolling to rest against Irvine’s shoulder as Seifer tucked the voucher into one of the sniper’s pockets.
“Don’t say I don’t do anything for you, Irvine,” Seifer said as they left the commander’s office, Irvine to take Squall back to their rooms and to call Dr. K and Seifer to look for Zell. “Any idea how he got so sick?” the blonde asked, nodding at the secretary as they passed.
“He was only sneezing yesterday,” Irvine said, looking worriedly down at his lover.
“What about the day before that?”
“He was fine,” Irvine said as Seifer hit the button for the elevator. “It’s probably because he was out in the rain. I told him that getting so wet would be bad for him but he refused to wear my coat.”
“He’s never going to stop being stubborn,” Seifer said as they entered the elevator, Seifer hitting buttons for two different floors. “You take him back to your rooms and look after him. Zell and I will keep an eye on everything until he gets better.”
“Thanks, Seifer. I owe you one,” Irvine said as the door opened and Seifer got off to go look for Zell.
“No you don’t. Consider this a repayment for the favour you did us all by buying that book for Squall,” Seifer said as he prevented the doors from closing again. “But I don’t want to see anymore of those vouchers. We’re going to do this our way. Tell that to Selphie too.”
Irvine nodded silently as Seifer released the doors and the slid closed. Looking down at his lover’s flushed cheeks, he used the phone in the lift to call the doctor to their rooms.
“What was so important that you had to work today, love?” he asked the silent man in his arms. “You are not well.”
“Wanted to check the security cameras,” Squall whispered in a croaky voice.
“Why? No, don’t answer that, you shouldn’t be talking,” Irvine said, stroking a slightly shaking hand over the brunette’s damp hair.
“Had to check…on Seifer and Zell,” Squall said, hot face turning towards the coolness of the cowboy’s hand. “Feel hot.”
“I know love, we’ll be home soon,” Irvine said as the elevator pinged and he carried his lover through the Garden, ignoring all the enquiring looks that were coming their way.
“They’re hot too…” Squall said suddenly.
“Seifer and Zell. Hot for each other. Caught them kissing…on the cameras…in the quad,” Squall managed to say before finally passing out.
Irvine’s mouth fell open as he looked down at the unconscious man in his arms. Now he understood why Squall had been adamant about going out into the quad in the rain a few days earlier. He had said that he knew what the last voucher was that Selphie had given to Seifer and Zell and Irvine was willing to bet it was the same one that Squall had used that day to get him out of their cosy bed for a walk in the rain. Smiling down at the brunette, Irvine placed a light kiss to a flushed cheek, cradling his lover closer as he made his way home and to the waiting doctor.
