Disclaimer: All the Final Fantasy characters in this series of ficlets and/or short stories belong to those talented people at Square/Enix or whatever they are called now.

This is a series of Valentine's Day fics. Not all of them will contain smut, but they all are from the FF8 fandom, and the main pairing is, of course, Irvine and Squall. This will also be generally silly, have sappy moments and will hopefully be fun for you to read and fun for me to write. Enjoy.

This is YAOI - boys with boys, caring, desiring, kissing, hugging, groping…um, yeah…but that’s why you’re reading this, yes?

Book of Love: Voucher 17
By Garden's Gnome

Irvine awoke to Squall shaking his shoulder and squinted up at the other man.

“You realise this is the third morning you have woken me up, Squall,” Irvine said, still half asleep as he tossed the blankets aside and looked towards the window. “God, it’s still dark outside! Why am I awake?” Irvine asked as he groaned and flopped back onto the bed.

“Because you promised me a walk,” Squall said, tossing a pair of jeans onto his lover’s prone form. “And this is the only time I’ll have free until tonight.

Pulling the piece of clothing from where it had landed on his head, Irvine glared at his very awake boyfriend’s back as he sat back up, shimmied into his jeans, and then followed Squall out of the bedroom. In the kitchen, two thermos mugs full of fresh hot coffee waited for them. Squall grabbed both and moved to wait for Irvine next to the front door.

“Are you really going to be busy all day?” Irvine asked as he grabbed his coat and Squall’s jacket and followed Squall into the hallway, shrugging into his coat as they walked.

“Yes. I have another conference call with Laguna, orientation with a new group of cadets and Seifer will be phoning later this afternoon to make a weekly report,” Squall said as he handed over the coffee and put on his own jacket. “I won’t be home until close to dinnertime.”

“So you gave me this,” Irvine said, holding up the voucher that he’d shoved into his coat pocket the previous night before bed, the words - Love Voucher: A Dawn Walk printed in black on its white surface.

“I could have left you in bed and gone for a run through the training center instead. You wouldn’t have seen me all day though,” Squall pointed out as he sipped his coffee.

“Nah, I’ll survive the torture of your company,” the sniper teased with a wink. “Where are we headed anyways?”

“The quad. I altered the directional settings on the Garden so that it will be facing the sunrise,” Squall said as they passed the cafeteria and walked through the quad doors and out into the predawn light.

“So this is more like watching the sunrise than a walk?” Irvine asked as they walked down the stairs.

“I guess,“ Squall said and grabbed Irvine’s free hand and dragged him over to a bench near the edge of the quad, the dark blue ocean far beneath them as they settled down to watch the sun come up and begin a new day.

“Will I at least see you for lunch?” Irvine asked, wrapping an arm around the brunette’s waist and pulling the other man to his side.

“Maybe,” Squall said, not looking at his lover but unable to hide a small smile.

“Maybe I can persuade you to change your mind?” Irvine whispered against Squall’s hair as he rested their heads together, reaching out to take the thermos mug from the brunette’s hand.

“You could,” Squall agreed, tilting his neck to allow Irvine access to his neck.

Irvine wasted no time in dragging Squall astride his legs, lips fastening onto the brunette’s neck and sucking slowly. His hands roamed over Squall’s back, finally settling on the brunette’s bottom, gently squeezing the firm flesh.

“Tch, don’t you pair ever stop?” someone asked, almost causing Squall to fall off Irvine’s lap.

“Dammit Zell,” Irvine growled as he clutched Squall closer when the brunette moved to get off his lap. Squall sighed and stopped moving when Irvine refused to let go.

“What are you doing out here so early, Zell?” Squall asked as he picked up his coffee and took a drink.

“I’m always out here at sunrise,” the blonde said as he began to go through a set of stretching exercises. “I wasn’t going to say anything but a couple of my students occasionally join me.”

“Oh,” Irvine said as he released Squall, allowing the other man to slide off his lap and back onto the bench next to him.

“I’m not sure if they’ll join me until they turn up,” Zell said, moving through his morning routine with ease. “Thought you’d appreciate the warning though.”

“Thanks, Zell,” Squall said, turning to briefly watch the doors for any sign of movement.

Irvine watched the brunette frown as he scanned the doorway for other people and shrugged before grabbing Squall again and pulling him to sit sideways on his lap.

“Irvine,” Squall hissed quietly, not wanting to disturb Zell’s concentration.

“I don’t care,” Irvine said, holding his struggling lover against him. “You’re mine and I don’t care who sees me holding you. They‘re just going to have to get used to it.”

“But…” Squall began to say when he heard footsteps coming down the short flight of stairs and move towards them.

“Good morning Commander, Instructor Kinneas,” the two students said, both blushing at the sight before them.

Squall sighed and followed Irvine’s lead, silently nodding at the two cadets as they joined Zell. Another couple of students arrived, greeting them in the same manner before joining their instructor. A hand against the back of his head guided Squall to rest his cheek against Irvine’s shoulder and Squall complied, fully relaxing as both the sniper’s arms tightened around his waist. Irvine shifted a little, moving his body around so that they weren’t directly facing Zell and his students but looking at the brightest bit of sky.

“Save this voucher for another morning?” Irvine asked.

“No,” Squall said quietly. “This is just fine.”

Irvine smiled down at Squall’s head and then turned to watch the sunrise with him.
