Disclaimer: All the Final Fantasy characters in this series of ficlets and/or short stories belong to those talented people at Square/Enix or whatever they are called now.

This is a series of Valentine's Day fics. Not all of them will contain smut, but they all are from the FF8 fandom, and the main pairing is, of course, Irvine and Squall. This will also be generally silly, have sappy moments and will hopefully be fun for you to read and fun for me to write. Enjoy.

This is YAOI - boys with boys, caring, desiring, kissing, hugging, groping…um, yeah…but that’s why you’re reading this, yes?

Book of Love: Voucher 13
By Garden's Gnome

Irvine flopped on the sofa next to Squall and pulled his lover to him. The brunette allowed his body to be drawn across the cushions, snuggling against the sniper’s shoulder as an arm was wrapped around him. Dishes for dinner sat on the coffee table before them, along with a rather crumpled piece of paper, words hidden in the crinkles and creases of paper. Love Voucher: Take Out To The Opera.

“Sorry I can’t take you to Deling City to see the opera, love,” Irvine murmured into Squall’s hair as he held the other man close.

“It’s all right, Irv. You have classes early tomorrow and I have that conference call with General Caraway and dad about the space program and it’s likely to take all day. We need to have an early night.”

“You’re right, Squall,” Irvine agreed with a sigh. “That’s why I’ve brought the entertainment to you,” Irvine said as he grabbed the remote on the table and pressed play.

“What did you pick?” Squall asked as the disc in the player started.

“Well, seeing as opera was the voucher of the day, I chose to grab one that showcased Julia Heartilly’s talent.”

“You chose to watch Rinoa’s mother sing?” Squall asked, turning his head to look at his lover. “Why?”

“No real reason,” Irvine said, shrugging his shoulders as he tossed the remote onto the table. “I know she didn’t sing opera but I’m curious about her seeing as one friends was her only child. Plus I’ve heard she was pretty good.”

“She was,” Squall said quietly, glancing at the screen before looking at Irvine again. “I met her once. Well, not actually me, but dad met her and I was there because of Ellone’s powers.”

“What was she like?” Irvine asked as Squall turned more of his attention to the screen.

“She was rather nice, if a bit forward in her interest in Laguna,” Squall said, eyes watching the woman on the screen. “Rinoa looks very much like her mother. Julia played the piano beautifully.”

“Only played? I thought she sang too?” Irvine asked, frowning.

“Yeah, this was before she started her singing career,” Squall said, turning his face back to Irvine. “That song Rinoa is always humming was Julia’s first song with lyrics. Laguna inspired Julia just by watching her play.”

“That’s right, he had the hots for her too.”

“And she was the one who made the first move,” Squall said with a grin, resting his head on Irvine’s shoulder.

“No way.”

“She did,” Squall said with a nod. “Zell, Selphie and I were influenced by Ellone’s powers on our very first mission as SeeDs. We saw that part of Laguna’s past. He, Kiros and Ward had gone to Deling City to watch her play after some fighting. Apparently Laguna had been doing this for some time and she noticed. Kiros and Ward disappeared when she approached their table, leaving a nervous Laguna to deal with his crush. They ended up in her hotel room talking.”

“And that’s it? They just talked?” Irvine asked, looking down at his lover in disbelief.

“Well, Laguna talked, more like rambled on really,” Squall said, rolling his eyes as he remembered how Laguna rambled on that night. “Then Kiros turned up with new orders and Laguna had to leave.”

“Damn.”

“You know how it is,” Squall said, tilting his head back to look into lavender eyes. “When orders come through that call for immediate action, you drop whatever you’re doing and get them done. We’ve had that happen to us as well.”

“Yeah, we have,” Irvine agreed as he remembered on more than one occasion when they’d been about to have fun and Squall had been called away on some emergency that only the commander could deal with.

Getting Squall to sit up for a moment, Irvine stretched out on the sofa, moving to lie down and pulled his lover against his chest, the brunette’s lower body easily settling between his legs as they watched Julia sing.

“Do you ever wonder what if?” Irvine asked, stroking his fingers through tousled hair.

“What if what, Irvine?” Squall asked back, propping himself up by placing his arms on Irvine’s chest.

“What if Laguna hadn’t been interrupted?” Irvine said, looking away from the singer on the screen. “What if he and Julia had ended up together and not Caraway and Julia and Laguna and your mother?”

“For starters,” Squall began, frowning as he thought through Irvine’s questions, “I wouldn’t be here…we all might not be here.”

“How do you figure that?” the sniper asked, frowning back at his lover.

“I am Laguna and Raine’s child,” Squall explained patiently. “If I was born to Laguna and Julia, I’d be a different person. Rinoa would’ve been born a different person too. Then there’s the fact that Laguna may not have travelled and met Raine and Ellone, saved Elle when she was kidnapped, stopped Adel in Esthar. Adel could be ruling the world right now if dad hadn’t stopped her,” he finished, a small shiver of dread running through his body at the thought of Adel ruling the world.

“Wow, you’ve really thought about this,” Irvine said, cupping the brunette’s cheek with a hand as he felt the other man shiver.

“Getting to see parts of my dad’s life gave me a chance to think about his decisions and what might have been had he chosen differently.”

“Well I for one am glad he chose to do as he did” Irvine said, stroking the skin under his fingers. “And I bet the whole population of Esthar feel the same seeing as they made him their president.”

“Yeah.”

Squall let his head rest against Irvine’s chest once more as the sniper pulled him back down, smiling as his lover’s arms tightened around him. Together they watched Julia sing her song for Laguna, both of them glad for the decisions made that brought them together.
